Ayurveda recommends rinsing the mouth in the morning after cleaning the tongue and teeth with specially prepared mouth care oil - Gandusha. This is also known as "oil pulling". The oil is moved around in the mouth and pulled through the teeth. The oil is then spit out. This process is said to strengthen the gums and teeth.
Regarding Gandusha, the Charaka Samhita says:
"Performing oil gargling strengthens the jaw bones and voice, develops the face and maximum taste of food... Teeth do not get caries and become firmly rooted. There is no toothache or sensitivity, the teeth can chew even the hardest food." (Quote from the classic text - not scientifically proven)
