The spiritual significance of incense in Ayurveda
In Ayurveda and Vedic tradition, incense (Dhupa) is a sacred tool for purifying body, mind, and space. The rising smoke symbolizes the connection between earth and sky, between the material and the spiritual. Each fragrance affects the doshas and the subtle energy channels (nadis) in a specific way.

Traditional applications
For daily puja:
Begin your day with Sambrani or Nag Champa as an offering (Dhupa) to the deities. The rising smoke carries prayers and purifies the altar area.
For meditation and pranayama:
Sandalwood and natural oils support concentration and deepen breathing. The scent serves as an anchor for the wandering mind.
For Panchakarma and Ayurveda treatments:
Special herbal mixtures accompany cleansing treatments and therapeutic applications. They support the elimination of Ama (toxins) and promote Sattva (purity).
For Vastu harmonization:
According to the Vedic architectural doctrine of Vastu, incense cleanses negative energies and harmonizes the five elements in the room.
The art of proper smoking
-
Sandhya times: Smudging is best done during the transitional periods (sunrise and sunset).
-
Direction: Place incense in the east or northeast of the room.
-
Intention: Set a clear intention (sankalpa) when lighting the fire.
-
Duration: One stick burns for approximately 30-45 minutes â ideal for meditation.
Incense blends on charcoal:
For loose mixtures, use special incense charcoal. Place the charcoal in a fireproof bowl filled with sand, light it, and wait until it is glowing hot. Then add small amounts of the mixture â less is more!
How to use incense bundles correctly:
Light the bundle at the tip, let it burn briefly, and blow out the flame. Distribute the smoke around the room with a feather or your hand. After use, squeeze out the excess water in sand and store for later use.
